Fatigued Truckers

March 2021

Federal law extensively regulates interstate trucking.  A trucker is subject to hours of service requirements and is required to keep a log book.  The log book keeps track not only of the time the trucker is on the road but off duty as well.  The regulations place strict limitations on the number of hours a trucker may operate their truck without resting.

A trucker who is sleep deprived is a danger to all of those on the road.  A common cause of accidents is driver fatigue.  When a person is fatigued, it is harder to pay attention and reaction times are slowed.  A fatigued person's decision making faculties are also impaired.  Studies show that 30 to 40 percent of all heavy vehicle collisions are the result of fatigue
