Dangerous Texting By Truckers

February 2023

Texting while driving can be dangerous for any driver.  The danger is compounded when it is performed by a trucker.  Truckers operate large and heavy vehicles that require a high level of concentration and attention to the road at all times.  A trucker who is texting takes their eyes off the road which reduces their ability to react to the changing traffic conditions around their truck and puts those on the road in danger.  The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) found in a survey about 1 in 4 truckers admit to texting while driving and in another study found that truckers who text and drive are 23 more times likely to be involved in a near crash or crash.

The size and weight of trucks makes the collsions they are involved in especially dangerous.  Truck collisions often involve major injuries and fatalities.  Further, the specific rules which apply to trucks will need to be researched to fully evaluate the liability aspects of the case.
