The Impact of Speed on Pedestrian Safety

September 2024

Speed has a significant impact on pedestrian safety.  When vehicle speeds are higher, the risk of severe injury and death for pedestrians increases.

Several factors influence the relationship between speed and pedestrian safety.  Older pedestrians are at a higher risk.  As people age, the speed and which they move and their reaction time slows.  The increased speed of a vehicle does not allow as much time for an older person to react or get out of the way of a vehicle.  Younger pedestrians are also at risk.  The younger pedestrians lack the experience and judgment to appreciate how fast vehicles are traveling and the severe injuries that a vehicle can cause.

Even modest reductions in speed in pedestrian areas can improve safety.  The installation of speed cameras have shown to reduce the mean speed and improve pedestrian safety.  The presence of police and the enforcement of traffic laws can further reduce speeding and improve safety.  The design of safer intersections, such as roundabouts, can reduce pedestrian injuries.
