Common Signs of Nursing Home Neglect

July 2024

Here are some common signs of nursing home neglect:

  1. Bedsores -  These are also known as pressure ulcers.  This is an injury where the skin and underlying tissue are injured due to prolonged pressue on the skin.  Bedsores are a clear sign of neglect as they are an indication that the resident was not being moved or turned on a regular basis.
  2. Unexplained Injuries - Injuries such as burns, bruises, broken bones or head injuries that cannot be adequately explained suggest inappropriate care.
  3. Unsanitary Living Conditions - Dirty or soiled bedding and unclean living areas indicate the nursing home is not a clean and safe environment.
  4. Failing to Provide Medical Care - Neglecting to administer medication or failing to treat infections or injuries.
  5.  Infections - Frequent or untreated infections may indicate the resident is not receiving proper medical attention and hygiene care.
  6.  Mental Health Issues -  Suddent changes in the behavior or mood of the resident such as anxiety, depression and withdrawal from social interactions.

These listed are just a sample of what a concerned relative should keep in mind in looking out for nursing home neglect.
