Wisconsin Expands Move Over Law

December 2025

Drivers in Wisconsin are now required to slow down or move over when approaching a disabled vehicle on the side of the road.  The first move over law became law in 2001.  That law required drivers travelling on a road with two or more lanes in the same direction to move over for ambulances, law enforcement vehicles, fire trucks, tow truck and utility or maintenance vehicles with their warning lights activated.  If a driver is unable to move over to another lane safely, the driver is required to slow down.

Those who violate the law could face a moving violation and a fine.  If an injury or death occurs due to a violation, the penalties could be more severe.

At Herrick & Hart, we assist those everyday who have been injured on the roadways.  We understand the injuries that occur due to people using the roadways in a negligent manner.  If you have been injured due to the fault of another, take the time to seek experienced trial counsel today.
